Anthony Whitten taught in public Virginia high schools for 12 years. Of the 12, he spent seven advising The Guardian yearbook and The Watchdog newspaper at Westfield H.S. in Chantilly, Va. He also advised the The Stone Observer, a middle school newspaper. Whitten began his scholastic journalism career as a high school yearbook editor. He then served as Business Manager of Corks & Curls at the University of Virginia for three years. The Guardian yearbook has earned repeated national recognition; most recently it was recognized as a National Scholastic Press Association Pacemaker Finalist in 2017 and earned a Pacemaker in 2016. The yearbook has also earned two Silver Crowns from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in 2011 and 2012. 

Whitten earned a master’s degree in Teaching at the University of Virginia, focusing in social studies education. In his undergraduate work at the University of Virginia, he completed a double major in African and African American Studies, and History with a minor in Government. He completed additional coursework in journalism through an online program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is currently working on a second master's degree from Portland State University in Higher Education Administration and Student Affairs.

As the Scholastic Journalism Outreach Coordinator, Whitten leads the SOJC’s efforts at recruiting a diverse and talented undergraduate population. In this role and as well as the Executive Director of Northwest Scholastic Press, Whitten works on a daily basis to strengthen and grow high school journalism and media programs across the Pacific Northwest.
