Statement

Areas of interest:Critical Race Theory, Lifestyle Sports, Sociology of Sport, Male-dominated Spaces

Research Activities: I am a 5th year graduate student in the sociology department. Currently, I am working on my dissertation proposal, which will explore Mexican American surfer’s experiences with sport, in an attempt to understand if/how they experience race and gender based exclusionary practices and discrimination. I am also interested in exploring if/how Mexican Americans use sport to: contest race and gender based ideologies/stereotypes; create a sense of community and identity; and construct empowering/transgressive spaces and identities. This proposed study will take place in Southern California over the next year. My past work has focused on women surfer's experiences with marginalization and exclusion in leisurely spaces in Southern California.
