Profile

My area of study is United States history in the early Republic era, roughly 1789 up until the Jacksonian period, with emphasis on the transition from the American Revolution generation to the succeeding generation of leaders, thinkers and cultural icons.

I obtained my bachelor's degree in history from the University of New Mexico in 1993, specializing in East Asian history.  Later, I attended law school at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.  I served as the Senior Managing Editor of the Tulane Law Review from 1997 to 1998.  I graduated with a juris doctor in 1998 and went to practice law in Portland, Oregon.  For twelve years I was a commercial real estate attorney in Portland, practicing transactional law with an emphasis on timber and the forest products industries.  In 2010 I left the practice of law to return to the study of history.
