Research

Trish Markert is an historical archaeologist whose work focuses on place and migration. Her dissertation project combines methods from archaeology and linguistic anthropology to examine D’Hanis and Castroville, two towns that originated from a 19th century migration from Alsace to Texas. She uses archaeology, photogrammetry, oral history, narrative analysis, archives, and community-based research to understand how historic migrations and migration narratives affect place-making through time. Her work is supported by the Americal Council of Learned Societies, National Geographic Society, Wenner-Gren Foundation, Council of Texas Archeologists, and Medina County Historical Commission. She is currently completing her dissertation as a Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellow for 2020-2021.
