Sol Joye is the Associate Director for the Oregon Research Schools Network (ORSN). ORSN is an early-phase research and outreach effort within the University of Oregon’s College of Education. The purpose of this Networked Improvement Community is to create a robust partnership that will help bring educational research and practice together to identify and address problems of practice that are hindering student academic and behavioral outcomes in order to improve high school graduation rates across Oregon. Prior to working with ORSN, Sol was the Learning Integration Coordinator for the College of Education’s Office of Global and Online Education. In this role, he worked directly with an array of educational and non-profit entities in instructional design, coordinating online and hybrid learning implementations, and overall project management. These experiences ranged from working with school districts in and out of Oregon to working with US State Department sponsored non-profit community organizing efforts across the developing world.
Before coming to work with the UO College of Education, Sol was a middle school classroom teacher (social studies and game programming elective courses), instructional leader, and EdTech Cadre liaison in the Forest Grove School District from 2007 to 2014. In 2012, he was selected as The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History - Oregon History Teacher of the Year and won the Beveridge Family Teaching Award for K-12 Teaching by The American Historical Association. Prior to teaching in Oregon, he taught for several years in the Sacramento City Unified School District in California.
He has presented his digital and online instructional teaching strategies and methods (e.g. project, problem and games-based learning curriculum) at numerous national educational conferences including AERA, NCSS, AMLE, and the Games + Learning + Society (GLS) Conference at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI.
