Statement

Erica Rand is visiting UO this year from Bates College, where she is Whitehouse Professor of Art and Visual Culture and of Women and Gender Studies.  She teaches and writes on contemporary culture with particular attention to sexuality, race, and gender–and, within these areas, to queer and trans sexualities and genders. Her writings include Barbie’s Queer Accessories (Duke, 1995) and The Ellis Island Snow Globe (Duke, 2005) and Red Nails Black Skates: Gender, Cash, and Pleasure On and Off the Ice (Duke, 2012), grounded in participant-observation research in adult figure skating. She also serves on the editorial board of the journals Criticism, Salacious (a queer, anti-racist, and feminist sex magazine), and Radical Teacher, recently co-editing, with Shana Agid, a special issue of the last called Not Another Special Guest: Teaching “Trans” Now  (no 92, 2012).  This fall at UO she is teaching WGS 422/522 Queer and Trans Sports Studies
