Biography

John Mellgren is an experienced litigator practicing environmental law in federal and state trial and appellate courts around the country. At Oregon Law, he is a Pro Tem Instructor and teaches the Environmental Law Clinic course, supervises students enrolled in the Clinic, and also teaches an undergraduate Introduction to Environmental Law and Policy course. John is General Counsel and Staff Attorney at the Western Environmental Law Center (www.westernlaw.org) in Eugene, Oregon. At WELC, John is a member of the Wildlands legal team and pursues advocacy in and out of court to protect healthy forests, clean and wild rivers, and species listed under the federal Endangered Species Act such as grizzly bears, wolverine, Canada lynx, and gray wolves.
John holds a B.A. (Economics and Political Science) from the University of Michigan and J.D. (Certificate in Environmental & Natural Resources Law) from the University of Oregon, where he served as Co-Director of the 2010 Public Interest Environmental Law Conference.
